Vila Real de Santo António Historical center
The old town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio is the result of a project of the Marquis of Pombal in 1774, decided to reorder the ancient village of Santo Antonio da Arenilha destroyed by waves in the sixteenth or seventeenth century, the populated area in the Spain border.
The buildings of Vila Real de Santo Antonio were built in just 5 months.
The Marques de Pombal Square is the center of the city of Vila Real de Santo António. In the historical center, is where are located: the Mother Church, the City Hall, the Museum Manuel Cabanas and an obelisk in a square with portuguese cobblestone. The set was designed by architect Reinaldo dos Santos. The streets are directed according to the cardinal points, in perfect grid, with uniform architecture
