Algarve Monuments Albufeira Mother Church
Located on rua da Igreja Nova (New Church Street), dates back to the eighteenth century (1782) and consecrated on July 15, 1800 by the Bishop of the Algarve, Dom Francisco Gomes de Avelar. The Church has replaced the old Church which collapsed during the earthquake of 1755.
Neo-classical Architectonic style, with a single nave, has 4 side chapels, the baptismal chapel, the choir, two pulpits and two side rooms. These rooms are dedicated to the Holy Souls, the Bispo São Luís (Bishop Saint Louis), the Nossa Senhora de Fatima and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Deserves to be mecioned, a magnificent painting by the artist Samora Barros, from Albufeira, that graces the main altar of the church and serving as background image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Conception), the saint patron of Albufeira. Above the arch of the main door and the triumphal arch is the Cross of Aviz, military-religious order to which belonged Albufeira.
