Vila Do Bispo Beliche Fortress (Fortaleza de Beliche)
The Forte de Beliche, or (Fortaleza de Santo António do Belixe), popularly known as Fortaleza de Belixe, is located in a dominant position over Praia de Belixe Velho (Belixe Old Beach) in Cabo San Vicente (near Sagres), Algarve, Portugal.
The original structure, dating back to the sixteenth need of defense against coast piracy, was ruined by the attack of the pirate Francis Drake, in 1587.
The monument dates back to the XVII century, when the structure was rebuilt after 1632, by order of Philip III (1621-1640).
Currently we can see the remaining wall panels, batteries and bunkers restored, and the Chapel of Santa Catarina, whose origins date back to a donation from Prince Henry (1394-1460) shortly before his death, and whose altarpiece in Baroque Style, was moved in 1997 to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça (Church of Our Lady of Grace), in the nearby fortress of Sagres.
