Forte (Fortress) Ponta da Bandeira, also known as Forte do Pau da Bandeira, is located at the mouth of the creek Bensafrim and the Atlantic Ocean.
This is a construction of a defensive (XVII century), with moat and drawbridge.
The fortress was built in the context of the Restoration War between 1679 and 1690, near Lagos harbor, with the task of defending this harbor and to complement the defense of Lagos and the south coast of Portugal.
The Fortress, sea style fortress architecture, has a tall square. In each of the vertices around 1960, were built cylindrical watchtowers.

Inside the fortress, there is a chapel, internally covered by tiles.
The fortress balconies offers a wide view over the Atlantic Ocean, with a possible sighting area of
Alvor and Praia da Rocha, in the nearby town of Portimao.
