Very close to Largo Detrás dos Mouros, stands the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo. From the mosque, supposed to have been originaly built in the thirteenth century, stands a Arabic window and probably, the current bell tower.
It gots one of the most representative and beautiful Gothic doorways, richly ornamented. On the facade, can see a variety of elements from the same period, as the cornice with gargoyles and a window-shaped warhead.
The interior has three naves, and it must be noted, that in the main chapel, are the tomb of Dom Paio Peres Pereira and seven of the Knights of Santiago, legendary figures due to recapture of the city from the Moors, who were killed in a treacherous ambush. The Church of Santa Maria guards the memory of a past that goes back to the history of Tavira.
In the various chapels, stand out the Blessed (eighteenth century), the Soul chapel (eighteenth century) and the Our Lord chapel, D Manuel I Style, with tiles and altarpiece
carved eighteenth century.
You can also admire the beautifully tiles decoration and an image of Our Lady (eighteenth century).
