Algarve Monuments Tavira Atalaia Military Headquarters
Atalaia Military Headquarters, located in the parish of Santiago, in Tavira, was built in the year 1795, by Governor General of the Algarve, the Earl of Vale dos Reis, Nuno José de Mendonça Fulgencio Moura Barreto. For this quarter came from the Infantry Regiment No. 14 (RI14), from the city of Faro.
Around 1837, with the extinction of RI14, due to the support gived to Miguel of Portugal during the Liberal Wars, was placed in the headquarters, the snipers battalion of Nº 5, replaced ten years later by the Snipers Battalion Nº 4 (BC4). This battalion was transformed, years later, in the Infantry Regiment No. 4 (RI4), who returns to Faro in 1915.
The headquarters of Tavira, are a remarkable example of military architecture of the eighteenth century.
