On the last weekend of July, São Brás de Alportel becomes the scene of a festival of food, crafts and entertainment, with the completion of the Feira da Serra, the event is already a reference in the country and a must see mandatory for those who live or visit the Algarve.
For three days, colors, skills and flavors of the mountain blend back in time, to our own roots, the stories made of traditions, legends and customs, which carve the stone with mastery, which are weaved in looms, which are painted on the screen, which bring in the corner and danced with soul.

The Feira da Serra (Mountain Fair Event) of São Brás de Alportel was born of a joint organization of the Association SPOT with the City in the summer of 1993. Sierra Cauldron (A Serra do Caldeirão) down to São Brás de Alportel, in its wealth, human and cultural heritage, visible for 3 days that are filled with food, folklore, crafts and live entertainment. This takes in approximately one hundred craftsmen from all over the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo.

Tavira city Roman Bridge

Tavira Roman Bridge, also known as "Tavira Old Bridge", it’s one of the symbols of the city.

There are divergent theories about it's origin, but the more likely is the existence of an earlier Roman bridge of the third century, which has been rebuilt, or even, built another bridge in its place in the early medle age period, because of that, some also call this bridge, as “The Roman Bridge of Tavira”.

Making the conection between the two banks of Gilão river, in the center of Tavira city, this bridge has therefore undergone several changes over the centuries, but in the seventeenth century it receives its current appearance. Since 1989, during the great flood that took place here, the bridge became pedestrian.

Today it’s required passage point for thouse who visit Tavira, due to its asymmetry, beauty, architecture and the beautiful landscape of the city of Tavira.


The Roman Bridge is the ex-libris of the city and it has a great importance as a route of communication that over time merges the two sides of the village and established the much needed communications in East Algarve.

To keep the tradition, the interior of the Algarve will receive during the next 6 and 7 March, the mythical and famous ride all-terrain Salir TT extreme motorsports, organized by the Mototurismo office of Salir Cultural Associationr, and with the main support of Mitsubishi - Entreposto Algarve.

The 2010 Salir TT Extreme Motorsports Edition, starts on March 6 af 7:30am, in front of Salir Parish office Junta de freguesia de Salir),  with the pilots concentration, leading four-wheel drive machines, motorcycles, buggies and quads, should be ready to go, on an adventure inside the Serra's Caldeirão tracks, overlooking beautiful countryside, riding to the north, throu the mountains tracks, to the mountain Village of St. Barnabé, where the lunch will take place.

For those who like to enjoy de adrenaline of the Extreme motorsports, and like to exploit the capabilities of their machines and look for extreme 4WD (4x4) adrenaline, on March 7 will have a perfect day, you will find along the way, some Extreme Trial Tracks, especially prepared using side slopes, cross axis and mud tracks.

Throughout the tour there are several control points of passage of the participants, and its progression in the field followed closely by the organization's vehicles equipped with communication systems.

Calçadinha Romana de São Brás de Alportel (São Brás de Alportel Roman Road)

The São Brás de Alportel "Calçadinha" is an ancient Roman road. It is a monument in the process of classification is the historical and archaeological ex-libris of this town of Algarve.

Center Explanatory

The Explanatory Center of São Brás de Alportel "Calçadinha" is located in the building of the former municipal slaughterhouse, refurbished in this new cultural space. The objectives of this center are to investigate, protect and promote "Calçadinha" São Brás de Alportel. This site is coordinating the work of archaeological research developed in the municipality.
This center is a permanent exhibition - "Calçadinha" São Brás and archaeological heritage of the county.

How to Visit

From the Explanatory Center and Home of the "Calçadinha" the visitor is guided on a walking over 1480 meters in two sections. On the way there are 12 information boards about the village of Sao Bras de Alportel,

the history of the site, the remains and archaeological materials found in the general aspects of the Roman roads of the Algarve, construction techniques and peculiarities of both sections.

In section A, with about 100m long, there is a paved renovated in the XIXth Century. In section B, with about 550m in length, there is a paved probably of Roman origin

You may also visit Tôr Roman Bridge, 15Km West from here, after the typicall village of Querença

Groups of visitors with between 6 and 25 members can request previously a tour Guided of the "Calçadinha" and Historic Center.

Palheiros de Veio, consists in primitive structures of circular shape, made of stone covered with thatch, can be found in the Monte Branco (Mont Blanc) of Vascão in the village of São Barnabé(Saint Barnabas), county of Almodovar, Beja district.

St. Barnabas is a village situated in a valley in the Serra do Caldeirão mountains, in the border of the municipality of Almodovar with the municipality of Loulé (border of the Algarve with Alentejo), 50 km away from the typical village of Querença.

Since immemorial time, it is said that the huge rock where the castle was built was a sacred place for Dragane, Celtic tribe who came to the Iberian Peninsula six centuries before Christ.

Since very early times, that in this rock was built a castle, small at the time was called Forte do Queijo (Chese Fortress), 22 centuries After the Druids in the year 1643, The King El Rey Dom João IV ordered the construction of a new castle on the existing infraestructures, and this was called the castle of St. Francis Xavier.

Composed of angular design, wide shot platforms and large walls, whithout towers, with moats for the land zone, a tremendous portcullis, etc.. all this architectural ensemble of the castle is a beautiful work of art.

The Statue of Gil Eanes is located in the Garden of the Constitution, in Lagos, the statue designed by Canto da Maia is a tribute to the Lacobrigense navigator, squire to Prince Henry, who in 1434 doubled the Cape Bojador.

The Navigator is situated next to a barrel containing a makeshift vase plant, symbol of the discovery of land beyond Cape Bojador.

The Church of the Third Order of Carmo de Tavira, is located next to the Convento do Carmo (Carmel Conventry), in the parish of Santa Maria.

History

The construction of the church dates from 1744, the building constrution, was ordered the by the

members of the Third Order of Carmel. Its façade, was completed, only in 1792.
With a Baroque style porch, the plan of this temple is a Latin cross. In its interior architecture predominates the Manueline Style (rococo).

Have six chapels distributed throu is single nave: the first side of the Gospel, is dedicated to the Prophet Elias - founder of the Carmelite Order; in front of it, is the altarpiece of the chapel, dedicated to St. Teresa of Avila, followed by, opposite to each other, the twin altars of St. Albert and St. Efigénia respectively on the side of the Gospel and on the Epistle side.

Finally and at the door, there are the altars of St. Anthony and Our Lady of Conception. The two side altarpieces of the triumphal arch are the invocation of Our Lord of the Steps and Our Lady of Anguish.

In the Chapel, stands out all the main altarpiece and the painting of the lining of the dome architecture

and feigned central screen with a representation of Our Lady of Mount Caramel, delivering the scapular to St. Simon Stock.

The authorship of the existing paintings are due to Jose Ferreira da Rocha and Joaquim José Rasquinho.
