Salir Castle, did not have the citadel, and was probably built in the twelfth / thirteenth century, in full Muslim occupation in order to protect farmers from Christians atacks. They was afraid of its conquest by the Knights Templar of The Order of Santiago, which happened after the capture of Tavira.
Its walls were built of mud, the process of ancestral origins and that for centuries was the method used in constructing houses in the Algarve. It consisted of a crushed sand, stone, clay and lime, lying in wooden molds, beat up to a maximum compression. Dried in layers, repeating the operation to obtain the desired height. They created it, so blocks that applied in the construction of walls.
Although Salir Castle little remains today. But the ruins of its walls, its location, offers great views of the hills and green fields around. That make this village a pleasant, welcoming place.
