The Cerro de São Miguel Mountain
The Cerro de San Miguel (411 m), about 4 km north west of Moncarapacho, Olhão area is undoubtedly one of the places that provides one of the most beautiful sights in the Algarve, including at south, Olhão, Faro, the coast of Albufeira, Spain on the East, and the Mountain cliffs of the Serra do Caldeirão at North.
This mountain has always been a conspicuous point very important for sailors, since antiquity - the Greeks called it the Holy Mountain or Mount Zephyr (god of the west wind, the wind that took them back home).
According to local tradition, after the Christian reconquest, the hill would have received the name of Prince Henry favorite Saint, because it was the first point of Portuguese land, he had seen on his return from Morooco, after the conquest of Ceuta.
In the first half of the XX Century there was a stone cross on top of the hill to mark the Christian meaning gived to the site.
