Algarve Wonders Rocha da Pena
Like Benémola Water Source (Fonte da Benémola de Querença), Rocha da Pena is a classified site that benefits of environmental protection. Situated on mid Barrocal, inside Serra do Caldeirão Mountains, between Benafim and Salir, comprises a length of more than 600 hectares.
Relief rough place, covers an extensive plateau with about 2 miles long and nearly 500 feet high, with several caves.
At the top of the rock, the Algar dos Mouros (Moorish Algar), historically known to have been there that the Moors took refuge when the reconquest of Salir.
Among the flora, rich and varied, the highlights are the beautiful pink yarrow, wild orchids and fragrant rosemary, where bees collect nectar.
