The municipality of Loulé is full of historical heritage, churches and monuments
The Nossa Senhora da Piedade church, the saint patron of Loulé. It's situated in one of the Loulé city entrances, In the Road of Loulé to Boliqueime. During the ceremonies, is given a path of pilgrimage:
Situated outside of the urban center of Loulé, the Nossa Senhora da Piedad Chapel (Our Lady of Mercy), or Mãe Soberana Church (Sovereign Mother), stands on high ground. Built in the eighteenth century, in the site of an older building is, by its location, an excellent view over the city and the sea.
Of modest architecture and construction, inside is evident, the altar of the chapel, with an altar carved
of the eighteenth century. The image of Our Lady of Mercy, the seventeenth century, placed in a prominent place, is characterized by an expression of great drama.
The origins of the devotion of the population of the municipality of Loulé to Mãe Soberana (Sovereign Mother), are lost in time. At the time of Easter celebrations are held in his honor, that culminate in a curious event: the second Sunday after Lent, a group of men carries the image of the patron in a litter, up to race pace on the road leading to the Chapel.
