Querença Folar celebrates Easter

The typical village of Querença once again, on April (days 18 and 19), celebrates another edition of the traditional Easter cakes Festivities (Festa dos Folares de Querença) in honor of Our Lady of Grace (Nossa Senhora da Graça).
This is one of the many gastronomic and religious events that take place throughout the year in this typical village of Loulé county, Algarve region, which aims to maintain and publicize an old tradition linked to the Easter celebrations: the Feast of the Passover Easter cakes A Festa dos Folares da Páscoa).
The festivities starts in 18 April at 21h00, with a live Fado music concert show, in the Hall of the People's House (Casa do Povo de Querença).

The next day, April 19, at 15h30mn, takes place the Eucharist celebration, followed by the solemn procession with the statue of Our Lady of Grace, through the streets of the village.

One of the highlights of the event is the auction of offerings and Easter Cakes (Folares) that occurs in the Churchyard at 17h00mn. The festival closes on a high note, with the concert of Guitar Quartet "Concordia" in the Church of Querença.


This is an initiative of the Querença Parish Commission Festivals, whith the support of Loulé Municipality City

Hall.

Rocha dos Soidos (Soidos Rock), is located in the municipality of Loulé, in the parish of Benafim, where at 470m hight we find a 2nd order geodesic vertex landmark.
The visit to the top of Soidos Rock,will provide a good walk, a nice climb and an amazing view across the surrounding area.

Enjoy de walk, the wonderfull amazing view, relax and have fun.
I recommend extreme caution near the border of the rock, due the proximity of the cliff, and increased attention on windy and rainy days, keep a good margin of safety. Do not take unnecessary risks.

Algarve Wonders Malhão mountain

Malhão lies about 537 meters in altitude between the source of Arade river and Vascanito river, is a region with high mountains and slopes.
When we climbed the mountain slopes of Malhão we found brownish fields, but when we went to the bridge that separates the administrative Algarve region from Alentejo region we found more or less intense hills, and the MU Hill (578 m) is the highest mountain, of Serra do Caldeirão. At west we find the Arad river, and at north, near the Alentejo border, the Vascanito river. The natural landscape is a huge potential of this region.
From the top of Malhão we can see the western Algarve, Cape Sagres and Monchique mountains, to the east we can see the Cerro dos Negros mountain, Salir, Querença and Cachopo (northwest of Municipality of Tavira), at north and northwest we can see the mountains near Almodovar.

The stream of Odiáxere rises in the Serra de Monchique in the area of Marmelete, supplies the Bravura dam, and have a catchment area of 160 km2, nearly 30 km long, passing through Odiáxere and its mouth in the estuary of the Ria de Alvor, between Meia Praia and Alvor.

The Bravura Dam, built in Monte da Bravura is the 5th largest dam in the Algarve, with 41 meters deep and a capacity of 35 million cubic meters of water, have three islands inside the dam, in addition, supply water for irrigation of the fields around and supply water for municipalities of Portimão and Lagos.

Down through hills and valleys, we find the Ribeira de Algibre. Located

inside the Municipality of Loulé, the river rises in the Serra do Caldeirão, a beautifull natural park, in the area of Salir, then cross the Fonte (Water source Benémola (around 5Km from here) (see video), and joins with the river of Mercês who born in Fonte Filipe, near Cerro dos Negros Mountais, (all 3 inside the Tipical parish of Querença 6km from here), then in the Quinta da Ombria, together forming the Ribeira da Tôr, in the parish of Tôr (around 3 to 4Km from here) to later be called Ribeira Algibre, joining with the Ribeira de Alte and Ribeira de Paderne, leading to the Ribeira de Quarteira.

The Church of Alte, is in the parish of Alte, Loulé council. Dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Our Lady of the Assumption), dating back to the thirteenth century, or earlier. Its construction has been ordered by the wife of the second Lord of Alte, so thanks to the return of the husband, who returned the from Eighth Crusade to Palestine.

It is believed that this church, an ancient mosque was adapted. See the similarities of the architecture of this church, with the Church of Querença and Loulé Mother Church (ancient Mosques).

The church was refurbished in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, presenting currently an interior composed of three naves separated by arches, supported by strong columns. The biggest highlight is bound to the beautiful vault, tiled eighteenth-century blue and white.

The gilded altarpieces of the chapels of Our Lady of Mount Caramel, Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Francis contrasts with the color-glazed tiles that decorate the Chapel of St. Sebastian. Beautiful images of Santa Teresa, the seventeenth century, and Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Margaret, the eighteenth century, complete the decoration of the church.

The parish of São Marcos da Serra is located in the northern part of the Municipality of Silves, bordering the south Alentejo at North. Place of ancient occupation, the parish of S. Marcos da Serra has been populated since ancient times, as evidenced by various findings, including the burial site of Sapeira and the Monte Branco Site, dating back to the I and II centuries, respectively.

The places, names of Arabic origin - Alcaria, Benafátima and Courte Mourão attest to the Arab occupation of the area.
Overlooking the town is the Church that goes back to the XVII, time of the Baptismal vassel manueline style.
Inside it deserves emphasizes the Baroque altar of the chapel.

In the church square, at northwest side, deserves see the ancient fireplace Algarve XVII century, the emblematic ex-libris of this parish. The chimneys are a reference point for the beauty of the Algarve its tracery, with different formats and always clearly visible in the upper house.

Located in the Praça (square) Gil Eanes, this sculpture was done by João Cutileiro. Inaugurated in 1972, perpetuates the memory of the King El Rey Dom Sebastão who promoted Lagos to city in 1573 and from here, in 1578, he went to the conquest of Alcazarquivir where he died in that fatal expedition to Morocco.

Around the disappearance of King it grows the "Myth of Sebastian" which lasted for the history, literature and philosophy of the Portuguese until today. The people refused to face the tragic and fatal destiny of the king, believed that he would come back in fog.

Morabitos are cubic shape tempels with a spherical dome that evoke the Muslims morabitos, used as burial sites of ascetics.The Marabito of São João (St. John) is the largest and is located in the cemetery. In one of its facades, reads in Latin: "Ego sum vox clamantis in the desert".The Marabito of São Pedro (St. Peter) is near the cemetery and there is still a third morabito, attached to the Mother Church of Alvor, which serves as a vestry.

Chapel of St. Michael

The Chapel of St. Michael, is located on the northern slope of Cerro de São Miguel Mountain.
According to legend, the Chapel of St. Michael, was built by Prince Henry and received the name of his favorite saint, because the Cerro de São Miguel Mountain, was the first point of Portuguese land that he saw when the return of the conquest of Ceuta. Arguably, this chapel there at least since the sixth century XVI and it occurred festivals and promises of payments to the nineteenth century.

The Chapel provides a beautiful view of São Brás do Alportel, and the possibility of picnic tables in stone. Inside are some old pictures of Our Lady.

Open every third Sunday of each month, by 17 h, for the celebration of mass.
Also at Christmas, it is customary to celebrate the Mass of the Rooster.

From the top of Cerro de São Miguel Mountain, we can see Albufeira, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, the Andalusia territory of Spain. The view is magnificent.

Born in the hills of the place of Cortiçada and Pero d'Elvas, inside Serra do Caldeirão Mountais (NorthEast of Querença), is nearby Corte Serrano, Mestras, Barrada, Pero Dias, Santa Justa, Alcaria Queimada, Vaqueiros, Soudres, Palmeira and Tenência (among other mountain villages) and flows into the valley of Odeleite, The Ribeira da Foupana, is part of the landscape of the Guadiana River and adjacent Streams. This water line of exceptional landscape value, is a landscape where we can observe an open valley, with several curves that the steam does during is course,until its end. The Foupana steam divide the Municipalities of  Alcoutim and Castro Marim and is one of the main steams of the Guadiana river.

In ancient times, the banks of the steam was used for the water mills, since it was necessary to transform the grain into flour. Tis is part of the other Algarve, less known and much quiet and deserves to be visited.
